About Herlev-Gentofte Hospital
In the mid-1950s and 1960s there was a need for another hospital since many people were moving in to the city from the countryside. In 1966 the decision was made to build Herlev Hospital and the hospital was finished in 1975. From 1955 to 1976 when the hospital was opened the number of inhabitants in the area increased from 300.000 to 630.000. With its 25 levels, 120 m, Herlev hospital is the highest building in Denmark.
In 2015 the two hospitals Herlev and Gentofte was fused. The two hospitals are now located at two different sites under one administration. The new hospital now services 425.000 people in Ballerup, Gladsaxe, Herlev, Egedal, Rødovre, Furesø, Gentofte, Lyngby-Taarbæk and Rudersdal municipalities.
Radiotherapy has been a part of Herlev Hospital since it was opened in 1976. In the early 2000 there was a need for a new and larger radiotherapy department so an adition to the hospital with a new radiotherapy department was built. This was finished in 2005 and is currently operating 8 Varian iX linacs and one Varian TrueBeam linac. The radiotherapy department is found at the furthest north part of the hospital.
